For the misinformed few, they equate fear with respect.

Of course, you know that there’s a world of difference between the two. When people respect you in every sense of the word, it means that they also like you as a person. When it comes to fear, you get the “respect” that you look for because people are afraid of the repercussions if they go against your desires. While that sounds good for a while, you don’t get the friends you need when life gives you a kick in the gut. Fear doesn’t create friendships, at least, not in the way you think.

Take a moment to define what it is like to truly respect someone.

Your past experiences of heartaches and pains must have taught you something about the word. It is by committing mistakes that you actually learn how we should treat other people. If you a sensible person, they are sincere with the people they respect. They find ways to make these people happy because they don’t wish that person ill. You can actually become good friends, one whose relationship is based on mutual trust and respect.

At the very heart of successful relationships is respect.

Whatever level that relationship may be in, there’s a certain kind of admiration held for that person. If you want people to respect you for who you are, you have to show that you deserve that kind of treatment. If you find yourself with a person who doesn’t treat you well, you’re both doomed for failure. It’s better to walk away from that relationship now before things blow up. If you stick around and be with this person, then you can end up hurting either one of you. The longer you’ll postpone in ending this relationship, the more time you’ll waste. It is simply but a futile effort to try and salvage things if you know deep down that it isn’t going to change.

Moreover, other people’s beliefs may be different from yours, but what is most important is that you acknowledge this. After all, people were raised in different environments, and have therefore different ways of coping with issues. Realize that each person is unique and that what is most important is the intention behind their actions. They act on things because of how they are and what their beliefs are, and it doesn’t always have to be about you all the time, so don’t take it personally if they go against you.

Communication plays a pivotal role with relationships.

By talking things through, you will come to an agreement which will help you understand the others more during the direst of situations. If understanding is impossible to do, then drop it and seek out someone else. This may seem harsh at first, but it’s all for the good. Remember, you choose your fate. No one can force anything on you if you don’t allow them to. The key ingredient to this healthy assertiveness is self love. Know your worth and treat people the way you’d want them to treat you. The golden rule applies here, and it is the most basic and most important of beliefs.

Simply stated, to get respect, you have to give respect!
