There’s a lot to be said about being selfless. But remember, there’s a fine line between this and martyrdom.
Before you think about others, you always must put yourself ahead. Sadly, many people sometimes assume that you are being selfish. Maybe you are, but remember, this doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Prioritizing yourself simply means that you support your core beliefs, the ones that keep your soul alive. Just be careful that when you put yourself first, it’s never at the expense of the needs of others. You are allowed, however, to back out of a responsibility when it gets in the way of your time to rest. Or, you could avoid people who constantly poison your thoughts with their constant whining.
Some people might again assume that your decisions were a bit too harsh, but in reality, putting your needs above everything else actually allows you to interact with others better. After all, when you take better care of yourself and the things that make your life better, you do more than increase your own wellbeing. You are also able to take care of the other aspects in your life such as health, home, and friends. More than anything, you will have the energy to spend time with others and share your blessings with them. The ripple effects of it are actually endless. When you look at the idea of selfishness, look at it as the act of giving in to your needs to that you also have more to share with the people around you. That’s a better way of looking at it!
The choice to live a life that reflects healthy priorities is important, especially if you want to touch the lives of others and be memorable.
You don’t want to be one of the thousands of faces in a crowd. It’s time to be distinct, to be different. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re striving for worldwide recognition. Instead, it simply means that at the end of your life, you know that you’ve done your part in doing something good. This can only be done when you honor the needs of others.
It’s time to rearrange your priorities and be a better person. You just need to commit yourself to taking dramatic steps that change the way you experience your life. Some people may not always agree with your decisions, just take this as a signal when to put things to a halt. But if you know deep down that you’re doing the right thing and that you aren’t hurting anyone in the process, don’t let their opinions hold you down. Get some me-time, even if you have to turn down requests of other people. That is the reality of authentic living. To stay true, go with what you feel deep down. Chances are, you’ll meet some form of resistance down the road.
Nonetheless, you need to get comfortable with honoring your needs. Don’t be apologetic about anything because your needs are more than enough reason to decline things out of a sense of remorse, trepidation, or requirement.
In the practice of self care, you will find that your willingness to advocate for yourself can truly be a liberating experience.
